About Author

Maryam Ashkan received her first doctoral degree with honors for being an outstanding scholar in vernacular architecture from the University of Malaya in 2010 , specializing in historic Eastern domes in the Middle East and in Central Asia. She got her second Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in the School of Architecture, Design & Planning, and specializes in teaching professionalism and instructional design in design studios and higher education. She has published many journal articles and book chapters at international refereed and ISI-indexed journals; additionally, she has served as a peer reviewer for different international journals. Ashkan’s papers are published in journals such as the International Journal of Architectural Heritage, Nexus Network Journal, International Journal of Architectural Research, and Open Journal of Architectural Design. To sharpen her knowledge in adult educational contexts, she took several courses of Master of Arts in Education/Adult Education and Training from University of Phoenix.
My professional efforts are given to the following interdependent educational goals in the field of architectural education:
- Improving the quality of student engagement and critical thinking
- Developing the curriculum around “big ideas” and essential questions
- Developing the 21st century skills of creativity and collaboration in teaching as a professional practice
- Creating performance assessments for measuring what matters most
- The science of teaching for understanding and transfer
